From the sandy beaches to grassy fields, kids love to explore and play, which often leaves their shoes bearing the evidence of these adventures. Maintaining these shoes is essential, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for the sake of good hygiene. You might be wondering how to wash kids' or baby shoes or what methods are the safest for the material. Let's answer those questions!

The Significance of Clean Shoes

Clean shoes are more than just a pleasing sight; they reflect good hygiene practices and boost the wearer's confidence. For kids, it also fosters a sense of responsibility towards their belongings.

Precautions Before the Clean

Before you dive into the cleaning process, remember: not all shoes are fit for a wash in the machine. Always check the shoe label or refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific recommendations or restrictions. Remember to remove laces, inner soles, and insoles to ensure a thorough cleaning.

Cleaning Methods for Different Shoes

Different types of shoes require distinct cleaning methods. Let's discuss how you can wash canvas shoes, Velcro sneakers, and leather shoes.

How to Wash Kids' Canvas Shoes?

Canvas shoes, known for their casual style, comfort, and versatility, are typically made from cotton or a blend of cotton and synthetic fibre. This material combination is lightweight and breathable but does tend to get dirty quickly. The good news is, these shoes are typically machine-washable.

Start by removing the laces and insoles, then use a soft brush to remove any loose dirt or debris. Wipe away any surface dirt with a soft damp cloth. Place the shoes in a mesh bag to protect them during the wash cycle. Set your washing machine to a lower spin cycle speed and use a gentle detergent. Avoid washing in hot water, as it can damage the fabric. Let the shoes air-dry in a well-ventilated area to avoid bad odour.

Note: If the canvas shoes are white, a small amount of bleach can help restore their brightness. But remember, less is more!

How to Wash Kids’ Velcro Sneakers?

Velcro sneakers are popular for their easy fastening, making them perfect for those who dislike tying laces. Cleaning Velcro shoes is simple. Begin by using an unused toothbrush or T-pins to remove the dirt from the Velcro hooks. Soak the shoes in warm water for a while, then handwash them with mild detergent and lukewarm water. They can also be machine washed on a gentle cycle.

Note: Avoid drying these in a machine dryer as it can damage the Velcro.

How to Clean Kids’ Leather Shoes?

Wondering if you can put leather shoes in the washing machine?

Leather shoes can't withstand the rough and tumble of a washing machine, as the harsh exposure can cause the leather to shrink, lose its shape, or even get damaged. Here's how you can clean them:

  • Remove dried mud and dirt with a soft-bristled brush or a damp cloth.
  • For stubborn stains, use a mild soap.
  • Allow the shoes to dry naturally. Use shoe stretchers during the drying process to help them maintain their shape.
  • Once dry, polish them with shoe polish, applying with a soft brush or cloth.
  • Buff the shoes with a clean, soft cloth for a final shine.
